Reasons For Switching Your Medigap Plan

Have you had something really great but you had to switch to another option for reasons out of your control? I know I have. For instance, years ago, I had a wonderful OBGYN physician but I had to switch to another OBGYN because my former doctor was no longer in my inurance plans network. Fortunately, for me my new physician was great too!

You may be very happy with your Medigap policy as well. But there are reasons why you may need to switch to another Medigap policy:

  • You’re paying for benefits you don’t need.

  • You need more benefits.

  • You want to change insurance companies

  • You want a policy that costs less.

Just like you want to briefly research a prospective medical provider before switching providers, you should compare benefits in your current Medigap plan to the plan you are considering changing to before switching as well.

Once you compare benefits and if you decide to change to another Medigap policy, make sure you call your new insurance carrier and apply for your new Medigap policy. When your application is accepted, make sure you contact your current carrier and give the representative the date your new Medigap policy begins so that they can terminate your previous policy. Please note: Make sure you tell the representative with your former carrier that you want your Medigap policy coverage to end after your new Medigap policy is effective for 30 days--this is what is considered a 30 day ("free look period").
